The $99 Whole-House Duct Cleaning: What You Actually Get

Why the price exists

A source-removal cleaning of one system takes two people several hours and equipment that costs as much as a car. Nobody can do that for $99 and stay in business. The low price is there to get someone into the house. It shows up on mailers, door hangers, robocalls and coupon sites, and Lewisville gets its share of all four.

How the visit usually goes

The pattern is common enough that it is worth knowing before the doorbell rings.

  • One technician arrives, often with a portable vacuum rather than a truck-mounted unit
  • The registers are vacuumed, sometimes with a short hose pushed a few feet into each run
  • The "whole house" turns out to cover a set number of vents, with a charge for each one beyond it
  • You are shown something dark inside a duct or on the coil and told it is mold
  • The upsell follows: sanitising, mold treatment, coil cleaning, "deodorising", or duct replacement

By the end, the invoice can be ten times the advertised price, for work that still did not include negative pressure or agitation of the runs.

What to do if you have booked one

Before anyone arrives, ask in writing what the price includes: how many vents, whether returns and plenums are counted, and whether the system will be held under negative pressure. If the answers are vague, cancel. If someone tells you there is mold, the EPA's guidance is on your side: you cannot confirm mold by looking, and a lab sample costs little. Ask for one before agreeing to any treatment. If an expensive add-on is pressed on you in your living room, you do not have to decide that day. Texas Business and Commerce Code Chapter 601 gives a right to cancel certain consumer sales made away from the seller's business within three business days; whether it covers a particular sale depends on its details, so read the contract and look for the cancellation notice the law requires.

Telling a real low price from bait

A genuine discount is a lower price for the same scope. The tell is not the number on its own but what comes with it. A company offering a real cleaning will ask how many systems you have, how many runs, and whether the attic is accessible, and the price will move with your answers. A bait price stays the same whatever you tell it, because the real price will be set at the door.

Common questions

Are all cheap duct cleaners scams?

No. Some are honest, smaller jobs, like vacuuming registers. The problem is calling it a whole-house cleaning. Ask what is included and judge the scope.

They found mold. What now?

Ask for a tape or swab sample sent to a lab, and do not pay for treatment until you have the result. Ask where the moisture is coming from; without fixing that, any treatment is temporary.

Can I report a bait-and-switch?

Yes. The Texas Attorney General takes consumer complaints, and the Better Business Bureau keeps a record of them. Keep the mailer and the invoice.
