When Duct Cleaning Is Worth It, and When It Isn't
Updated 2026-10 · Lewisville, TX

What the EPA actually says
The EPA's consumer guide on air duct cleaning is short and more sceptical than most duct cleaning advertising. It says knowledge about the benefits is limited, that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems, and that it does not recommend cleaning ducts routinely, only as needed. It also notes that much of the dust in ducts sticks to the duct walls and does not necessarily reach the rooms.
The cases where it is worth doing
Visible mold growth
Substantial mold growing on hard duct surfaces or on other parts of the system, confirmed by a lab rather than by eye.
Pests
Rodents or insects living in the ductwork. In North Texas attics this is more common than people expect, especially in houses backing onto greenbelt or open land.
Real debris
Ducts clogged with dust and debris, or particles actually blowing out of the supply registers.
The local additions
Construction dust from a remodel or a new build, a house you have just bought with an unknown history, or a system that ran through smoke or fire damage.
The cases where it usually is not
A dusty return grille is normal: it is where the air goes in, and the dust on its face is what the filter is about to catch. Vacuum it. A schedule that says every year or every two years is a sales schedule, not an EPA one. And allergy symptoms on their own are a reason to talk to a doctor and look at the filter, not proof that the ducts are the cause.
What to try first
- Fit a filter of the rating your equipment is designed for, in a slot it actually seals, and change it on time
- Look in the attic at the return: a gap around the return box or a loose filter grille pulls attic dust straight in
- Have the coil looked at. A matted coil makes a house feel stuffy and the ducts look dirty downstream
- If you have a gas furnace, which many Lewisville attics do, the EPA separately recommends having fuel-burning heating inspected before each heating season
If debris is still coming out of the registers after that, a cleaning is worth the money, and it will last much longer because the source has been fixed.

Common questions
Does duct cleaning lower energy bills?
A dirty coil or blower costs efficiency, and cleaning those can help. Clean duct runs on their own make little difference. Sealing leaks makes much more.
My house smells musty when the AC starts. Is that the ducts?
Often it is the coil, the drain pan or wet insulation near the air handler. Start there before paying for every duct to be cleaned.
