Dryer Vent Warning Signs, and the Fire Numbers Behind Them

What the numbers say

The US Fire Administration's report on clothes dryer fires in residential buildings estimated about 2,900 such fires reported each year, causing around 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss. Failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to ignition, at 34 percent, and dust, fibre and lint were the items most often ignited first. The fires peaked in winter, with January the worst month. That report used 2008 to 2010 data and an older USFA report put the count much higher, so treat the exact numbers as estimates. The cause is consistent across every version: lint that was not cleaned out.

Signs the vent is clogging

  • A normal load needs more than one cycle to dry
  • The top of the dryer is hot to the touch, or clothes come out unusually hot
  • The laundry room gets warm and humid while the dryer runs
  • Lint collects around the outside cap, or behind the dryer
  • The flap on the outside cap barely lifts while the dryer is running
  • A burning smell. Stop using the dryer until the vent has been checked

Five-minute checks

Pull the lint screen and hold it under the tap. If water pools on it instead of running through, dryer sheet residue has sealed it; wash it with a brush and soap. Pull the dryer out and look at the hose: if it is white vinyl or crushed foil, replace it with a short semi-rigid metal transition. Go outside with the dryer running and feel the airflow at the cap. A strong, warm flow is good. A weak one means something between the dryer and the cap is blocked.

When to bring someone in

If the hose and the cap look fine and the airflow is still weak, the blockage is inside the wall or ceiling, and that needs rods and a vacuum run the full length. Roof caps, long runs from a second-floor laundry and bird nests are all jobs for a ladder and proper tools. Once a year is a sensible rhythm for most households, sooner for long runs.

Common questions

Is a dryer vent fire really that likely?

For any one house, no. But failure to clean is the top factor in the fires that do happen, and it is cheap to prevent.

Can I clean the vent with a leaf blower?

On a short, straight wall vent it can clear loose lint. It will not move packed lint in a long run or a roof vent, and it can push lint into joints.
